Director of Instructional Technology & Assessment

Dr. Smith is the Director of Instructional Technology & Assessment in the Mineola School District, a position he was appointed to in July of 2022. In this role, he is in charge of integrating instructional technology, design thinking, assessment and student information PK-12. Additionally, Dr. Smith oversees the team at Synergy, a reimagined high school experience where students own their own time, space, and pace. Additionally, this program affords students the opportunity to pursue their interests and develop real world skills, preparing them for the modern world of work. Prior to this, Dr. Smith was the Principal at Mineola High School in Garden City Park, NY for seven years where he led the school to Apple Distinguished School Status as well as being recognized by Newsweek as a "Best School" for two consecutive years. In 2022, Mineola High School achieved a 99% graduation rate (#1 in the state of New York for General Education students and Top 5 in Nassau County for all subgroups). His other accomplishments include developing strand programs in Computer Science (Internet and Information Technology and Cybersecurity), Healthcare, Business, and Advanced Manufacturing where students earn college credits, workforce credentials, and complete internship experiences. He is also proud of the development of flexible learning environments, a state of the art Fabrication Lab, a Future Ready Library, and an increase in AP and dual enrollment offerings available to all students in Mineola including an AP Computer Science Principles for All program.   Dr. Smith has been with the Mineola School District since 2002, beginning as the Assistant Principal in the Middle School. From 2011 -2015 he was Assistant Principal in the High School. Prior to joining the Mineola School District, Dr. Smith was a special education teacher and Athletic Trainer in the Locust Valley School District.  Dr. Smith received his Bachelor's degree from Rutgers University; a Master's degree in Special Education from Adelphi University; a Master's degree in School Administration from LIU CW Post University; and a Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from St. John's University. Dr. Smith  is also an Adjunct Professor at Adelphi University and Long Island University and a contributing author to The Design Thinking, Entrepreneurial, Visionary Planning Leader: A Practical Guide to Thriving in Ambiguity.
